Third Learning Journal
This week’s reading mainly talked about how at the start of social media it was mainly just about getting users to onboard their platform and whichever platform had the greatest number of users would be the most popular and winning one. Nowadays, its mainly looked at for the business side of it. It is clear that majority of people go on social more then watch television these days so instead of media advertisers taking their ads to televisions commercials more and more businesses are moving to having their ads displayed on popular social media plat forms like Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Since this has started happening it has changed the way that platforms look at their consumers. Instead of Instagram for example knowing who everyone is that is signing up to be on their platform, they don't care about that as much as they care about finding out your likes and interest so that they can display those ads in your timeline page. For example, when I first made my Instagram account, my feed was just filled with funny stuff that was entertaining to me, then I started adding a bunch of my friends on it and we were sending each other funny dog videos for a while and before you know it, my whole feed is mainly just popping up with either more funny dog videos or lots of "dogs for sale" ads. Honestly knowing all this information completely changes the way I look at social media nowadays. Back when I was a kid, I used to look at social media as a really fun place to go to either post or look at and interact with other people’s posts and if I wasn’t doing that, I was just watching funny viral videos. Nowadays it just seems like one big business model scam to just completely track your every digital footprint so that they can try and make your feed as relative to what your search or what you like to see as possible. For example, if I want to look at jeans to buy and in type it in on google and then the next day, I go on social media, there will be multiple ads on jeans and different brands of clothing that were based off my search history, its honestly an invasion of privacy in my opinion.
